Remix Culture

Remix culture is an act of taking one or more works of art and adding to them, mashing them together, and combining them into something new and exciting. This new object could change the intended use of the original(s), it could be used to send a message, or could simply be something like a visual pun. It doesn't even have to be objects, remixing is constantly used in media like audio and video. This idea of creating something new out of possibly completely unrelated works of art is in itself, an act of creating art.

Here are a few remixes I came up with.

(Fig. 1) This is a "muscle car", just a goofy visual pun that popped into my head.

(Fig. 5) Iron-Man has always been one of my favourite superheroes, alongside Ghost Rider. So I thought, why not combine them? and also give him a laser gun? So that's what I did.

(Fig. 7) This cigarette case is aimed at making smoking incredibly uncomfortable for the user. This  lung-case is both uncomfortable to look at, to hold, and to put in a pocket. Hopefully this would help an addict quit their smoking habits.

(Fig. 8) This is a re-imagining of the famous mythical monster Medusa. Instead of a head full of snakes she's got a snake for a head, making her that much more terrifying.

(Fig. 9) It's hard to tell, but this is actually a mouth with a pen/pencil holder inside of it. When you fill up the holder, it looks like it's eating, or puking up all of your writing utensils.

(Fig. 10) This is both a phone case and a wallet, by using an already modelled phone case and a scaled model of a card, I designed a 2 card holder on the back of the case. This makes it easy to carry cards and almost eliminates the need for a wallet.

Papercraft Digital Samples

The point of this project was to design objects in Rhinoceros 3D for papercraft. I did this by initially creating a geometrical 3D object, breaking it apart, and then unfolding just like actual paper. Hollow Form Printing Concepts

Concept Generation Each of these objects is designed specifically to be printable as a shell. When creating these concepts I made a scale from fairly safe designs that should easily print, to incredibly risky objects that have a way higher chance of failing. In order to be a printable hollow form object, the design has to be able to support itself and at the same time fall within the parameters set by the printer itself. For a lot of these objects I designed I used the twist command because not only did it look great but it could support sharper angles without caving in, making a stronger hollow form object. Although the second design is my personal favourite, I think that designs one, four, and five are pushing the printer to further limits and my be a better choice to pursue. It will be interesting to see how well these objects print.

Objectification Inspired Computer

The Customizable Computer This object was inspired by the documentary Objectified  by Gary Hustwit. A lot of the objects and ideas presented in the film focused on the functionality of an object. For example the interchangeable  heads for a toothbrush, allowing the user to replace the head and keep the body saving both the environment and the user's money. Another concept in the film focused on customizability, and making an object unique to the owner. This two main ideas are what inspired me to make the customizable computer. It's essentially a computer designed to be taken apart by the owner and put back together easily. For example if someone loved to play music they could switch out their memory for a smaller one in order to fit in larger speakers. If a person preferred to play video games they could completely remove their speakers for a larger processor as easily as changing remote batteries.
